The covid-19 pandemic has led to a rise in the level of unemployment. This is worth paying attention to because no one wants to lose their job. As you might have heard, the post-covid era is a time for up-skill and its high time you made the decision to advance in your career. So, if you’re in tough spot currently, stick with me. I’m about to share simple tips on how to get to a point of career dominance.

Truth is, a lot of people stay in the same job role for way too long. They get comfortable and accept the status quo. Mind you, this is clearly a sign that you’re not growing and people that refuse to grow end up being dispensable. From experience, that’s not a good place to be.

So, here’s a simple way to look at it. To advance in your career, you need to keep growing. This means you need to pay attention to your ability to deliver more value over and over again. It’s that simple.

Now, when it comes to different job roles, the area of growth may differ. Therefore, it is up to you to first identify what your strengths are and what you need to work on to improve them. This means you need to be clear on the kind of value you are willing to offer and devise a clear path on how to get there.

If you’ve checked carefully, the individuals that add more value to what they offer end up climbing up the career ladder. This is because they have made a conscious effort over time to become indispensable. Every successful firm is seeking independent learners that will go on to solve real problems and that is the first step to getting to where you want to be, career wise.

When you get to point of clarity, it is important to execute on your plans. It’s not okay to just set goals and make bold statements. You have to ensure that you back your claims and hopes up with immense action. This means you need to set up a system to make what you intend to achieve possible.

Depending on what works for you, make sure you set out time each day to learn something relevant to your craft. This might mean sliding in that extra 10 minutes to learn during lunch time or putting aside one hour each day before you sleep. Either way, find a way to make it work. You can also consider getting useful tips and advice from experienced professionals that have gone way ahead of you. Try as much as possible to make every engagement and conversation count.

Finally, I can’t stress the importance of building relationships at work enough. Let’s be honest, no one likes working with a difficult and up-tight person. Its stressful. Find a way to break your social awkwardness and engage genuinely with your co-workers. Be on good terms with basically everybody. This is something we can all work on. You just need to focus on developing a good level of emotional and social intelligence. Most importantly, treat everyone well.

These are just simple and easily applicable tips you can apply to your everyday engagement. Remember, it is not enough to hope for a better role, it is vital that you take action in accordance to those goals. I wish you the very best!
